January 1, 2007

In the Tower Fantasy Football League Super Bowl, 308 defeated Coast-to-Coast 120 to 105 to claim its second ever league championship. 308 also won in 1996 defeating Who Cares (Lee Wheless’ old team). 308 rode LaDainian Tomlinson to the title. He was by far the top scoring player in the league with 451 points. That was 107 points better than the next player (Drew Brees). Just to give you a feel for how important he was, here are his weekly scores starting with week 6 (35, 25, 53, 52, 37, 44, 29, 41, 28, 51). His 51 points in the Super Bowl helped offset the -3 (that’s right, negative 3) 308 got from its quarterback. The other key component of the 308 season was the Baltimore defense. They finished the season as the overall number 5 fantasy player with 265 points.

In the consolidation game, Bevo’s Revenge defeated Blitzkrieg 113 to 83. Also, the Brazos Beatdown defeated the Masters 133 to 96. In the toilet bowl, Shag-adelic took high team honors with 130 points and 2005 Super Bowl runner-up, Lawson’s Men, took the low team honors scoring a total of 87 points. That was one point worse than Fi Card Charlee. We didn’t have any repeat winners during the three week toilet bowl competition.

I want to thank everyone again for participating. Of course, I thought this was the best year yet. 308 would like to especially thank the CowHorn LongBoys for drafting Shaun Alexander before us. We liked him better than LaDainian. 308 would also like to thank Donavon McNabb for getting hurt. I never want to see a player get hurt. I’ve had four knee surgeries thanks to football so you can be sure I’m being very sarcastic by saying that (don’t want to mess with karma). With that said, the guy was having an unbelievable season as was Bevo’s Revenge. Bevo’s Revenge had a great year even with the loss of McNabb which is a credit to them. They would have been hard to beat if McNabb stays healthy.

I hope everyone has a great 2007 and I will definitely be in Vegas for the 2007 Tower Fantasy Football League draft (and I hope I go third again).

December 12, 2006

It’s an all South final as South division champion Coast-to-Coast will face South 2nd place 308. Coast-to-Coast defeated fellow South division foe Blitzkrieg 123 to 105 while 308 defeated North champion Bevo’s Revenge 120 to 87. The two teams split their regular season match-ups with Coast-to-Coast winning 111 to 86 in week four and 308 winning 127 to 94 in week 11. I tried to see how long it has been since 308 or Coast-to-Coast had been in the finals. It’s been a long time. My website goes back to 1998 and neither team has made the finals since then and both teams were charter members of the league.

Good luck, Coast-to-Coast.

Fi Card Charlee blew away the competition for the high team honors of the toilet bowl scoring 161 points. Low team honors went to Pimpin Ain’t Easy who scored a total of 96 points. They narrowly defeated the CowHorn LongBoys who totaled 99 points. The Masters scored the most points of the week with 164 and defeated the Brazos Beatdown 164 to 99 in the consolation game.

December 5, 2006

It was a sweep by the South division in the first round of the playoffs as both teams from the South won their playoff games. 308 defeated the Brazos Beatdown 129 to 106 while Blitzkrieg defeated the Masters 117 to 82. 308 now takes on North champion Bevo’s Revenge while Blitzkrieg gets to play fellow South foe and division champion Coast-to-Coast. 308 and Bevo’s Revenge meet in the playoffs for the second year in a row. In 2005, Bevo’s Revenge came away with a close 51 point victory.

In the toilet bowl, the Spice Boys took high team honors with 130 points. The real competition was for the low team honors. In third place was Sparky’s Oilers whose roster combined for 101 points. In second was Pimpin Ain’t Easy who scored a total of 100 points. Your winner was Cleveland Steamers who scored a total of 97 points. They were led by QB Rex Grossman who totaled a negative 8 points and led both the Bears and Cleveland Steamers to victory.

November 28, 2006

Bevo’s Revenge ended the season about the way they started it. They won their game going away to secure the North division title and tie South division champion, Coast-to-Coast with the best record in the league and they won the high team honors for the week to boot scoring 133 points. It was a competitive week as 10 of the 16 teams scored over 100 points and six were within 14 points of Bevo’s Revenge. This was Bevo’s Revenge sixth weekly prize. The other winner was Jim Beam Traveler (their first) who scored 59 points with the combination of Jerricho Cotchery (11), Anquan Boldin (16), Donald Driver (20), and Todd Heap (12).

There were no surprises in the playoff chases. Both teams that were fourth going into the week didn’t get the necessary breaks to move up. As such, your top three teams in the South are Coast-to-Coast, 308, and Blitzkrieg. Your top three teams in the North are Bevo’s Revenge, the Masters (who are on a seven game winning streak), and the Brazos Beatdown. Congratulations to both new teams who made the playoffs in their first year.

Bevo’s Revenge is trying to defend their league championship from last year. 308 also made the playoffs last year. 2005 semi-finalist, Lawson’s Men, had the biggest fall. They ended up in a tie for last place in 2006. Coast-to-Coast and Bevo’s Revenge will be off this week as the wildcard teams will play each other.

Don’t forget about the toilet bowl competition. All of you who didn’t make the playoffs will participate in weekly competitions to see who scores the most (with just starters) and the least (with the entire roster). Make sure you monitor your starting lineup.

November 21, 2006

One week left so it’s all about the playoffs. But first, the weekly awards. The Penetrators score 144 points in defeating the CowHorn LongBoys by 100 points! I’ll have to go through the archives to see if another team has been defeated by more than 100 points but there shouldn’t be too many. (On second thought, Sparky’s Oilers have been around a while so there may be quite a few instances.) 308 took high position honors by one point with the combination of LaDainian Tomlinson (44) and Reggie Bush (10). The combined 54 points was one better than the Brazos Beatdown who also had LaDainian but only got 9 points from Julius Jones. For those of you keeping score, the Penetrators or 308 have won the last six weekly prizes and 7 of the last 8.

You should take a look at the standings. Both divisions are almost identical. The first six  places in the South have the same record as the first six places in the North. The last two teams are only one game off their divisional counterparts. This also means that the playoff scenarios are similar. Coast-to-Coast and Bevo’s Revenge have clinched playoff spots in spite of both teams losing this week. In the South, 308 and Blitzkrieg are tied for second and play each other this week. The winner of that game is in the playoffs. The Penetrators are rooting for a 308 win. The Penetrators are one game back of 308 and Blitzkrieg. If they win this week, the will be tied with the loser of the 308/Blitzkrieg game. 308 has the tie-breaker advantage over the Penetrators while the Penetrators have the tie-breaker advantage over Blitzkrieg. The North has the same situation. The Masters (behind their six game winning streak) is tied with the Brazos Beatdown for second with Shag-adelic one game behind them. They all play different teams this week. The Brazos Beatdown has already clinched a playoff spot due to them possessing the tie-breaker advantage over Shag-adelic. The Masters is in with a win or a Shag-adelic loss. Shag-adelic needs to win and the Masters to lose as they possess the tie-breaker advantage over the Masters.

It should be an exciting close to the regular season this week. Only three games currently separates 1st place from 6th. I think this may have been the most competitive season yet.

For the teams making the playoffs, the seedings will be based on the website standings.

November 15, 2006

It was another clean sweep as the Penetrators scored the most points of any team this year (190) to take the high team and high position honors. This is two of the last three weeks for them to win high team honors as they fight for a playoff spot. The combination of Carson Palmer (49) and Jeff Wilkins (15) won the high position honor.

So Coast-to-Coast clinches the division title last week. How do they follow that up? The one loss team decides to lose to last place Pimpin Ain’t Easy which wins only its second game of the season. Also in the South, Fi Card Charlee loses their fourth in a row and now finds themselves tied with the Penetrators one game back of Blitzkrieg and 308 for the two other playoff spots. The North has a similar look. Bevo’s Revenge has now given themselves a two game lead to clinch at least a share of the division title. The Masters won their fifth game in a row to pull into a tie for second place with the Brazos Beatdown (the new teams are doing all right). There are three teams one game behind them. Almost every game is a big game this week.

November 7, 2006

It was a clean sweep for 308 as it took high team honors with 169 points and high position with 80 points (Roy Williams 28; Joey Galloway 26; Marvin Harrison 18; Jeremy Shockey 8). With three weeks left, the playoff picture hasn’t gotten much clearer. In the South, Coast-to-Coast has clinched the division title. After them, there are six teams within one game of each other. It just so happens all six teams play each other this week. In the North, no one has clinched a playoff spot yet and only one team is out of the race (Lawson’s Men).

October 31, 2006

For the second time in four weeks, 308’s quarterback scored negative points. Of course, we lose by 9 points. We don’t deserve to make the playoffs. Enough ranting.

It was a separation weekend. With only four weeks left in the season, the available playoff spots are getting harder to reach. Though no teams are officially eliminated, there are quite a few that are close. In the South, Coast-to-Coast boasts the best record in the league (only one loss) and has a two game lead for the division lead. Four teams are within one game of 2nd and 3rd place. In the North, the top three teams all won and there are five teams within two games of first place. There are four teams with three wins and they will need to win out to have a chance.

High team honors went to the Penetrators (133 points) who were one point better than the Brazos Beatdown. Speaking of the Brazos Beatdown, they did beat down Jim Beam Traveler by 95 points. That’s easily the blowout of the year. JBT could only manage 37 points which is a season low (thanks for outdoing 308). The Brazos Beatdown also easily won high position honors with 72 points. LaDainian Tomlinson (53) and Julius Jones (19) helped score the highest winning position week of the year.

October 28, 2006

In the highest scoring game of the week, Coast-to-Coast took high team honors in a 138 to 121 victory over Fi Card Charlee. It gives Coast-to-Coast the outright lead in the South division as both teams entered the game tied for first. Coast-to-Coast scored one point better than Bevo’s Revenge who also won to take over sole possession of first place in the North division. With only five games left in the regular season, the remaining games become critical as teams will begin to place themselves out of contention. In the South, four teams are within three games of third place. In the North, the last place team is only two games out of third. It’s still wide open.

Interesting fact of the week – The two division leaders have had less than 700 points scored against them so far. The team with the worst scheduling – The Penetrators who have had 848 points scored against them so far.

Let’s see. It’s quarterback/kicker week. I wonder who won?!? Bevo’s Revenge wins their fifth weekly prize of the year and their third with the combo of Donovan McNabb (32 points) and Neil Rackers (12 points). They have won all three quarterback/kicker weeks with this combination.

October 23, 2006

After scoring the lowest points of the season in week 5, 308 comes back with a vengeance and scores the most points of the season in week 6 with 176 points. It was the highest scoring week of the year so far with every winner scoring at least 100 points for the first time this season. Fi Card Charlee took high position scoring 71 points (Randy Moss 8; Darrell Jackson 21; Anquan Boldin 20; Antonio Gates 22).

Close game of the week was the Penetrators one point win over Blitzkrieg (120-119). In addition, our final undefeated team went down. Coast-to-Coast lost to the CowHorn LongBoys. Those two games served to tighten up the South playoff race with six teams within three games of each other. The North stays even tighter where two games separate all eight teams. The two teams tied for the North lead both lost to the two teams tied for last place.

Should be a fun race to the finish.

October 10, 2006

It was a record setting week for 308. First of all, we scored 44 points total. I thought this might be a record low but I only had to go back to last year to find worse. Both the CowHorn LongBoys and Sparky’s Oilers had 39 point weeks last year. The record we set that might go unbroken is fewest points scored by a player. Before this year, the lowest a player could score was zero points. With the awesome rule change we implemented this year, interceptions result in negative points. 308 then makes an awesome roster move to pick up Chad Pennington. How does he reward us? He scores -6 points. That’s right – negative six points. What started out as a promising year has quickly gone down the drain. At least the Horns won.

I had naturally already written down Bevo’s Revenge for high team with their 132 points when I look down some more and see someone miraculously scored more point than them. Fi Card Charlee (??) scored 135 points to take high team honors (and they did it without Donovan McNabb). The Penetrators took high position honors with 43 points (Larry Johnson 15; Deuce McAllister 28). These are the first weekly honors for both teams.

The South is turning into a three team race with the lone undefeated team, Coast-to-Coast, and two others with one loss. The North is still wide open with only three games separating first to last. Congratulations to Pimpin Ain’t Easy and Lawson’s Men who won their first games of the year. Every team now has at least one win.

October 3, 2006

I hate Philadelphia (I also hate OU). I hope the Cowboys (and Horns) exact some kind of revenge for me. Going into Monday night, 308 has a 32 point lead and Coast-to-Coast has two players to go. Not a huge lead with two players out but decent. By half-time McNabb has a TD run but Green Bay is playing okay. In the second half, all hell breaks loose. McNabb almost beat 308 by himself. Result – not enough sleep and a bitter loss.

Bevo’s Revenge is not bitter this morning. They took high team honors with 166 points (20 better than the next team). That’s the high score of the season so far. Their kicker only scored four points but that was four points more than Coast-to-Coast’s kicker. It was enough for Bevo’s to sweep the weekly prizes winning high position with 61 points (Donovan McNabb 57; Neil Rackers 4). That makes four weekly prizes for Bevo’s in four weeks - twice with the McNabb/Rackers combination. Save some for the rest of us!

We’re now down to one undefeated team (Coast-to-Coast) as Fi Card Charlee goes down. Two teams remain without a win – Pimpin Ain’t Easy and Lawson’s Men. Congratulations to the CowHorn LongBoys and Sparky’s Oilers on their first wins. Close game of the week was the Spice Boys one point victory over the Masters keeping Spice Boys in a three way tie for first place in the North (where there are three other teams one game back).

September 26, 2006

It was a weird week. Scoring was all over the place. The two teams who tied with the second highest scores for the week played each other. Remember to set up your tie breaker scoring. I sent out numerous e-mails about what to do. We had the second lowest score of the season. Pimpin Ain’t Easy only mustered 55 points. Only the Masters’ 46 points in week two was worse. The Cleveland Steamers picked up their second consecutive high team honor scoring 145 points. No one else was within 25 points. The two teams closest were Sparky’s Oilers and the Penetrators who played to a 119-119 tie. Sparky’s Oilers would have won the game via the tie-breaker but failed to mark their players. As such, the Penetrators get the win. Bevo’s Revenge won their second high position honors with 50 points. A big week by Javon Walker (38) plus contributions from Reggie Wayne (8), Chad Johnson (1), and Desmond Clark (3) was enough for the win.

The five undefeated teams quickly fell to two. Both are in the South where there are also three teams without a win. The North is wide open with five teams with one loss and two with two losses.

September 24, 2006

Week two summary. Scoring was up in week 2 with nine teams scoring over 100 points. Best for week 2 was the Cleveland Steamers with 164 points. Just so happens that was the same point total of the week 1 winner. Coast-to-Coast took high team honors with the RB duo of Brian Westbrook (21) and Rudi Johnson (25) and a total of 46 points. They narrowly beat out Lawson’s Men who scored 44 points. After two weeks, we’ve had four different weekly winners. Also after two weeks, there are five undefeated teams and five without a win. Hard luck team so far is Shag-adelic who has scored a total of 303 points (almost 50 better than the next best team) yet sports a 1-1 record. Jim Beam Traveler has the same record and scored 155 points.

September 22, 2006

Week one summary. I’ve been very late with any commentary but nobody seems to mind too much. Regardless, I’m finally caught up a little and can give you the highlights of the week. First, let me tell you my sob story about week one. The week of the first games, the following events take place: my oldest daughter has complications from her tonsillectomy and we have to go to the hospital in the middle of the night (she is okay), then my 1994 Honda Passport finally dies and I don’t have a car (my wife doesn’t share). Finally the football games are going to start and I can stop worrying about my other problems. First off is the Electra Tigers, ranked in the top 10 for who knows how long (dropped to Class A which helps). The defense doesn’t give up a score but the offense fumbles in their own end zone which the other team recovers and they lose 7 to 6. On Saturday, Greg Davis puts together another masterful game plan (déjà vu to OU games 2000-2004) and the Cowboys lose. 308 winning was the only thing that kept it from being a clean sweep but it wasn’t enough to keep me from a deep depression. This past weekend almost everyone won (Electra lost but my sophomore, defensive lineman nephew for Archer City returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown – it’s been a while since a Rowe scored a touchdown) and I feel better about the world.

The results. Shag-adelic ran away with the high team honors scoring 164 points (35 more than the next team). Only three teams broke 100 points. The real shocker was that Sparky’s Oilers outscored three teams (Jim Beam Traveler with the low of 62). Bevo’s Revenge took high position honors with 44 points (Donovan McNabb 33; Neil Rackers 11). They were one point better than Spice Boys.

New teams went 1 and 1 with the Brazos Beatdown (and their moving team logo – a little too advanced for most of us) getting their first win and Blitzkrieg losing a heart breaker by one point to Coast-to-Coast.
