The 1998 Season

Season VI

Update January 10, 1999

Three teams still owe me money. Once I've collected from them, I can write checks. The three are Shag-adelic, CowHorn LongBoys, and Unretired.

Update January 6, 1999

I've posted the week 17 results. Hook 'em Horns everybody. Thanks for a great fantasy season. Look for Vegas updates periodically over the next few months. Make sure and check back every once in a while.

Update December 23, 1998

I've posted the scoring for week 16 in case anyone is curious how they would have done. I'll post the week 17 scoring January 2. Merry Christmas everyone and happy New Year!

Update December 15, 1998

It's all over with and newcomer Lawson's Men are the champions. They did so in style defeating Who Cares 129 to 100. The 129 points was the most by any team this week. In the consolation games, Sparky's Oilers defeated 308 88 to 77 and Breaking Wind defeated the Penetrators for the second week in a row 107 to 102. In the toilet bowl, Smoke a Bowl just now regained the form that made them last year's champion by winning high team with 127 points and Triple Threat really proved they are the worst team by winning low team for the second week in a row with 71 points. This is a team that has Barry Sanders and Randy Moss? Nice going guys.

Update December 14, 1998

Sunday scoring is posted for the North and Central divisions. I couldn't get the statistics downloaded for the South.

Update December 13, 1998

Starting lineups are posted.

Update December 9, 1998

Final scores are posted. It's Lawson's Men and Who Cares in the finals. These heavy weights led their respective divisions most of the year and it is only fitting that they meet in the finals. No BCS crap here. The best teams earn the right to play in the finals. Lawson's Men killed 308 187 to 76 and Who Cares easily handled Sparky's Oilers 155 to 107. In a consolation game, Breaking Wind defeated the Penetrators 102 to 101. In the toilet bowl, Starr's Cigars won high team with 186 points and Triple Threat won low honors with 85 points. They were the only team under 100. First game this week is Sunday but still try to get me your starting lineups by Thursday. Lastly, I've sent out Rowe Bowl entry forms so please turn those in to me as well.

Update December 8, 1998

The statistics weren't ready this morning so I won't have scores updated until tomorrow.

Update December 7, 1998

Sunday scoring is posted. If 308 had know Lawson's Men was going to score 172 points (and their QB hasn't played yet), we wouldn't have made those damn roster moves. You roll the dice... Going into tonight's game, Lawson's Men leads 308 172 to 65 (left to play: LM - QB Farve; 308 - WR Freeman) and Who Cares leads Sparky's Oilers 140 to 102 (left to play: WC - QB Farve; SO - WR Brooks). High team is currently Starr's Cigars with 186 points and low team is Triple Threat with 79 points (left to play - D Green Bay). Congratulations Aggies on an impressive win and especially good luck against Ohio St. (I don't want any more David Bostons leaving the state). As you celebrate your success, remember one thing -- we beat you. Be checking your e-mail the next few days for the Rowe Bowl Contest.

Update December 4, 1998

Starting lineups are posted.

Update December 1, 1998

Can you believe it's December already. Less than twenty five days left to do your Christmas shopping. Final scoring is posted. Playoff lineup for next week: Lawson's Men vs. 308 and Sparky's Oilers vs. Who Cares. The scores were incredibly high this week. 308 defeated the Penetrators 133 to 113 while Sparky's Oilers defeated Breaking Wind 162 to 145. Spinn took high team honors with 187 points and Against the Odds took low team "honors" with 109 total points. For you toilet bowl folks, remember that the scores revert back to zero for this next week. I believe there is a game on Thursday so starting lineups need to be in before it starts.

Update November 30, 1998

After Thursday, things seemed bleak. The Cowboys got thrashed (and I thought UT had a lousy pass defense) and my opponent gets 52 points from Aikman and Emmitt. Then Friday comes and hope is restored. UT has won the last three out of four. I won't say anything else about the series here. Finally, I get to Sunday and the scoring update. Scoring reports are posted and here's where everything stands with a big game and lots of players left to play tonight. 308 has a 129 to 106 lead in its playoff game. 308 has the SF defense playing and the Penetrators have Jerry Rice and Steve Mariucci. In the other playoff game and thanks to Marshall Faulk's 55 points, Sparky's Oilers have defeated Breaking Wind. Not so unbelievable is that a wild card team would beat a division champion but that it's Clinton. It means he's won more money that I probably will never cut a check to him to pay off. In the toilet bowl you better have a Viking on your starting team or you are out of luck. The Hoosiers had one and lead the winner's bracket with 177 points. There are a few team within striking distance if some of the SF players have big games. In the loser's bracket, Zebras has a slight lead with 75 points and two players playing tonight.

Update November 24, 1998

Final scoring is posted. Breaking Wind (9-3) held on against Hut's Heroes (8-4) to win the North division and allow 308 (8-4) in the playoffs as the wild card. Lawson's Men (10-2) won the Central while Sparky's Oilers (6-6) won the wild card berth as Spinn (6-6) fell to Triple Threat this week. One game separated five teams for the wild card chase in the Central. There was no suspense in the South where Who Cares (10-2) won the division and the Penetrators (8-4) won the the wild card spot. Who Cares and Lawson's Men receive first round byes this week. Breaking Wind faces Sparky's Oilers while 308 faces the Penetrators. Starr's Cigars swept the weekly prizes with 146 team points and 51 points from their wide receivers. It's now a new season and every team has a chance to win. The first game this week is Thursday so roster lineups are due by Thursday morning.

Update November 23, 1998

I was having problems getting through to the statistics service so I'm not sure if the reports are updated or even accessible. I can give you an update on the playoff situation. In the Central, Sparky's Oilers won. That meant Spinn needed to win as well to make the playoffs. Currently, Spinn is down by 18 points and both teams have a running back playing tonight. In the North, 308 comes up with 79 points to defeat the CowHorn LongBoys while Breaking Wind is currently beating Hut's Heroes 113 to 77. Hut's Heroes has a defense in tonight's game and will need to score 37 points to make the playoffs.

Update November 19, 1998

I will be out of town until Friday night. I will update the starting rosters sometime Saturday.

Update November 17, 1998

My vote for team of the year goes to Who Cares. No real superstars on the team except for Farve. In the mean time, they go 9-2 (tied for league high), clinch their division, and win three weekly prizes. Last week they swept both categories in an overall low scoring week. This week, Lawson's Men (142 points) barely beat out Hut's Heroes (139 points) for high team. CowHorn LongBoys and Starr's Cigars tied for high running back (72 points). Both had Fred Taylor (48 points) while the CowHorn LongBoys had Emmitt Smith and Starr's Cigars had Jamal Anderson (both 24 points). Now, how does the playoff situation currently stand. I'll start in the South because it's the easiest. Playoff teams are already set. Who Cares (9-2) wins the division and the Penetrators (7-4) get the wild card. In the Central, the division winner is set. Lawson's Men (9-2) wrapped it up a week or two ago. Spinn (6-5) is currently alone in second and can clinch the wild card with a win this week. One game behind are the Smithsonians and Sparky's Oilers. These two teams play next week in a must win game. Actually it's only a must win game for Sparky's Oilers. The best these two teams can do is tie Spinn. Spinn has the tiebreaker advantage over the Smithsonians while Sparky's Oilers has the tiebreaker advantage over Spinn. To summarize, if Spinn wins, they are in. If Spinn loses and the Smithsonians win, Spinn is in. If Spinn loses and Sparky's Oilers win, Sparky's Oilers are in. Finally, the North. What a disappointing week or two it's been. My fantasy team has shown its true colors and not scored more than 69 points the last two weeks. That's about the same amount of points my Longhorns have given up the last two weeks. Still don't have a defense. (Aggies! Don't throw the ball against us. I'm sure if you just run it, you will roll.) 308 (7-4) is now in third, one game behind Hut's Heroes and Breaking Wind who are tied for first at 8-3. These two teams play in the game of the year this weekend to decide who is the division champion. 308 will be rooting for Breaking Wind as it has the tiebreaker advantage over Hut's Heroes in case of a tie for second. Shouldn't Denver rest Terrell. He's got to be getting tired. Well, that's where everything stands. Have a good week.

Update November 16, 1998

Sunday scoring is updated. If late lineup changes went to my office they won't be reflected here. Final lineups and scoring will be posted tomorrow.

Update November 10, 1998

Final scoring is posted. Who Cares had a big week winning both the high team honors (110 points) and high QB/K with 35 points (Favre 11, Hanson 24). Who Cares also clinched the division title in the South. Lawson's Men clinched the Central division title. In the North, there is a three way tie for the division lead between 308, Hut's Heroes, and Breaking Wind. Big games this week in that division include 308 vs. the league average and Breaking Wind vs. the Zebra's (who are playing a spoiler role). In the Central, there are five teams within one game for second place. Three of the four games this week have playoff implications. In the South, the Penetrators have a one game lead for second place but there are five teams within two games of this position. All the games in the South this week have playoff implications.

Update November 9, 1998

Sunday scores are posted. I failed to report the individual winners from last week. High team went to Who Cares with 157 points and high receiver was shared by 308 and the Penetrators with 63 points each.

Update November 2, 1998

How about those Horns! The A&M game is looking bigger and bigger though UT still has some work left. Who would have thought they would have this good a season. Sunday scoring is posted. One last thing, I will be out of town Tuesday so final scoring won't be posted until Wednesday morning.

Update October 30, 1998

Preliminary lineups are posted. Happy Halloween!

Update October 28, 1998

The trade is complete and the North division scores are posted. I allowed the trade because (prior to this past weekend's games when the trade was made), the difference in the total points of the four players was 15 points. If you lined the players up from best to worst, the largest spread between YTD points was 54. This was between T. Davis and G. Hearst. Considering how many weeks into the season we are and the fact that everyone would probably agree that Davis has had a great year so far, I find that the spread between these players is not that wide. Lastly, I think that it is evident that the Zebra's did not hurt their team very badly (if at all). They won this week and scored the second most points in the division. Overall, I don't feel the trade is of an unfair nature. High team and position honors went to Hut's Heroes. If there is any consolation, it's that the Zebra's cost themselves $50 because of the trade.

Update II October 27, 1998

I've posted the final scores for the Central and South divisions. I am in the process of reviewing the Hut's Heroes/Zebra's trade in the North and won't post the final scores until a final resolution is made (which I hope to be tomorrow). Regardless of the outcome of that decision, high team and high position will be maintained by one of these two teams.

Update October 27, 1998

The statistic files were unavailable for download this morning so final scoring won't be posted until tomorrow.

Update October 26, 1998

Sunday scoring is posted.

Update October 25, 1998

Assuming no late e-mails at my office, final starting rosters are posted.

Update October 22, 1998

Preliminary lineups posted.

Update II October 20, 1998

With five weeks left, all division leaders have two losses and one game leads. None of the leaders square off this week so be on the prowl for upsets. High team honors were shared by Pai-Gowed and Lawson's Men. High QB/K went to Sparky's Oilers with 74 points (Young 47, Del Greco 27). Sparky's Oilers won with this same combination in week one.

Update October 20, 1998

Final scoring is posted. Since I lost I won't have commentary until tomorrow.

Update October 19, 1998

Sunday scoring is posted.

Update October 17, 1998

Final lineups are posted.

Update II October 13, 1998

Preliminary lineups are posted. Final lineups will be posted Saturday.

Update October 13, 1998

Believe it or not but we are at the half way point of the regular season. You will remember that the regular season is twelve weeks and the playoffs three weeks ending on week 15 of the regular season. At the half way point, 308 has a two game lead in the North with a league best record of 5-1. Lawson's Men and Triple Threat are tied in the Central with 4-2 records but play each other this week. In the South after Who Cares rips the Hoosiers 111 to 55, there is a three way tie at 4-2 with Who Cares, the Hoosiers, and the Penetrators. The Penetrators and Who Cares play in a big game this week. In that Hoosiers loss, the Hoosiers had six players out of fourteen with bye weeks, had one other who didn't play, had two others that didn't score, and four others that scored less than ten points. MVP for the Hoosiers this week -- their kicker. The North takes the weekly prizes with 308 getting high team scoring 162 points and Shag-adelic winning a prize for the second week in a row with 70 points from their receivers (Engram 29, Harrison 13, R. Smith 28). Lastly, I will be out of town from Wednesday through Friday. I will try to update rosters tonight and for sure Saturday morning. If you can get me your starting rosters today.

Update October 12, 1998

Sunday scores are posted. I haven't checked my voicemail or e-mail at work since Thursday so any roster changes left there are not reflected. Those updates won't be reflected until tomorrow.

Update October 9, 1998

Pre game starting lineups are posted as are updated roster transactions. There will be no more updates until Monday. Hook 'em Horns.

Update October 6, 1998

What are the chances your starting quarterback scores 66 points and your team still loses? I don't know but you can ask Spinn because he did it. Better luck next week. After five weeks, there are no perfect teams -- either all wins or losses. Three teams won this week for the first time. That means only three games separate first and last in each division so everyone is still in it (for the time being). Each division has one team with one loss (308, Triple Threat, Hoosiers). The Hoosiers??? There IS something wrong with the computer program. I will immediately ask for a corrected version and post the new South reports. High team for the week was Shag-adelic with 161 points. Against the Odds had the high running backs with 46 points (Allen 10; Davis 36). Lastly, I will be in Dallas this weekend for the UT-OU game (go Ricky!). This means I will post the lineups Thursday night and that will be it until Monday. Please try to get your preliminary lineups to me by Thursday. If you make changes after that please try to contact your opponent.

Update October 5, 1998

Reports with Sunday scoring are posted.

Update October 4, 1998

Final lineups are posted.

Update October 2, 1998

Preliminary lineups are posted as are roster transactions.

Update September 29, 1998

Final reports are posted. After four weeks there are no undefeated teams and only three who haven't won a game yet (Smoke a Bowl, Shag-adelic, Starr's Cigars). Sparky's Oilers won high team honors with 183 points. Spinn won high position by one point over the Hoosiers. Spinn had QB Cunningham (53 points) and K Hanson (13 points).

Update September 28, 1998

Reports with Sunday's statistics are posted.

Update September 25, 1998

Preliminary lineups are posted. There were also a few more roster transactions. I would suggest looking at your division's roster transaction reports before making any moves to ensure players are available.

Update II September 22, 1998

Reports are posted.

Update September 22, 1998

I wasn't able to update the online reports but I was able to download the statistics. I will try to e-mail the reports this afternoon and post the reports online tonight. After three weeks, there are only two undefeated teams (Triple Threat and 308) and three teams that are winless (defending champion Smoke a Bowl, Shag-adelic, and Starr's Cigars). The Smithsonians this week were the first team to defeat the league average -- so it can be done. The South was all blowouts this week. Margin of victories were 35, 39, 60, and 27 (which was the league average victory). The South also had the high team (Anacondas - 138 points). High position went to Hut's Heroes with 44 points (Rison 16, J. Smith 26, Thigpen 2).

Update September 20, 1998

Final starting rosters are posted. The Palzkill team has changed its name to the Smithsonians.

Update September 18, 1998

Preliminary starting lineups are posted. There have been a lot of roster moves this week and I've tried to e-mail them to everyone. A few got rejected because players had already been picked up. The roster transaction reports have been updated for all allowed transactions.

Update II September 15, 1998

All final week two reports are posted. Unretired made a clean sweep with 181 points for high team and 104 running back points picking up 52 each by Barry Sanders and Robert Smith. Game of the week and maybe the year was in the Central where Triple Threat beat Palzkill by one point (146 to 145). I don't remember a higher scoring game decided by only one point. After two weeks there are only four undefeated teams remaining. I find this amazing. Also after two weeks, no team has defeated the league average. This is the first week for byes in the NFL so make sure you check your lineups.

Update September 15, 1998

Apparently everyone and their dog works on their updates Monday mornings and it ties up all the servers. As a result, I've got reports updated through Sunday but not the Monday finals. Final reports will be posted Wednesday morning.

One note from last week. High team was Lawson's Men with 170 points and high position was by Sparky's Oilers QB Young and K del Greco with 56 points.

Update September 9, 1998

It looks like all the scoring reports are posted and hopefully you'll be able to access the web sites that house the reports. The South had some really close scores while the other two divisions were mostly blowouts. All three teams who played the league average lost. As I mentioned in my e-mail, I will be in LA this weekend and will not be able to update the website until Monday. Due to this, please e-mail your lineup to me and your opponent. If you don't know how to contact your opponent, tell me in you e-mail and I will forward it to them. Oh by the way, I have found that if you change the settings on your web browser to the smallest font size the reports are much easier to read and print out.

Update September 8, 1998

Due to problems with the statistic service's server, I wasn't able to download the Monday statistics. As a result final reports won't be posted until tomorrow.

Update September 7, 1998

Sunday scoring reports are available. Looks like 308 is going to start the season with a win. I like this year already.

Update September 6, 1998

Final starting rosters are posted. First scoring update will (hopefully) be Monday morning.

Update September 1, 1998

A couple of things to let you know. (1) Based on feedback I received, I have altered the payoff schedule a little. The weekly toilet bowl payoffs have been lowered. With this extra money, $25 prizes will be awarded to the week one playoff winners and $50 has been added to the champion. (2) Due to the odd teams in each division, I've had to restructure the schedule. The season will last twelve weeks. In order to eliminate bye weeks, the software will allow a team to compete against the league average. This will also ensure that all teams are eligible for the weekly prizes each week. I'm not sure how this setup will work out but I don't have much choice. We'll see how it goes. (3) The software is updated and reports are available on the web. It's actually a pretty good deal. The reports are printed directly to a website maintained by the software manufacturer. Links can be found below. This way more reports will be available and more timely as well. I'll definitely (if in town) be able to post starting lineups prior to and directly after game time.

Preliminary lineups are due by Thursday noon.

Update August 25, 1998

The rules have been updated. I need to hear from everyone as to whether you are going to participate in the draft and if so, where you will be joining us from. I need to coordinate to call in locations for the conference call. I didn't get the draft order up tonight. If you can't wait and didn't get the e-mail, give me a call.

Update August 24, 1998

The payoff schedule for the 1998 season has been added. I hope to have the divisions and draft order tomorrow.

Update August 1, 1998

Things are finally coming together for the start of the sixth season. We are expanding again and that process should be finalized this week. We've got our room at the San Remo reserved (and they promise the phones will work). I'll be working on the divisions and draft order soon as well. The website is updated too. From here on out, I will be updating as necessary.
