Jim Beam Traveler is your 2008 champion. They picked Drew Brees in the third round and he ended up the highest scoring player for the year. Even though they drafted last, they were able to take advantage of their top player and win what was the most competitive season in recent history. It truly was a season where any team could beat any team on a given weekend. JBT beats the Penetrators in the finals 100 to 87. A 33 yard TD catch by Calvin Johnson and a NY Giants safety were the big plays. Consolation went to Pimpin Ain't Easy who defeated Bevo's Revenge 99 to 76. The only close game was the wild card consolation game where Ditka for President won its second straight game over Coast-to-Coast. This time is was by one point 95 to 94. Cleveland Steamers took the high team prize in the toilet bowl with 149 points. This was 28 points better than runner up 308 (just wanted to mention my team one last time - it's been a tough year). This was the third winner in three weeks. It was a different picture in the loser's portion of the toilet bowl. Showing a domination rarely seen in sports, the CowHorn LongBoys won their third straight loser prize with a total of 64 points. That was lower than all but one team's starters (same as last week).
Congratulations to Jim Beam Traveler and the other winners (even the CowHorn LongBoys).

It's North division champion, Jim Beam Traveler, versus third place South team, the Penetrators, for the championship. Pimpin Ain't Easy had their lowest scoring output of the entire season while losing to the Penetrators 108 to 67. The North had a closer game with Jim Beam Traveler defeating Bevo's Revenge 99 to 86. Both division champions had Drew Brees as their QB who didn't have his regular high scoring game. JBT had the benefit of a 70 yard TD pass reception from Calvin Johnson. That play scored 22 points and was the difference in their game. JBT comes into the championship game having drafted last. I believe this is the first time a team drafting last has made the finals. The Penetrators has the third pick. In other action, the CowHorn LongBoys' season long strategy is finally paying off as they take the low team honors in the toilet bowl for the second straight week. Their roster wide score of 76 points was less than every other team's starters except for one. A dominating win by the CowHorn LongBoys. The high team in the toilet bowl was Fi Card Charlee who scored 154 points (more than every playoff team). Lastly, Ditka for President defeated Coast-to-Coast in the first round of the wild card consolation games 102 to 90.
December 2, 2008
The semi-finals are set after two blow out games in the wild-card round. The Penetrators defeated Coast-to-Coast 130 to 74 while Bevo's Revenge took out Ditka for President 113 to 77. Ditka scored so poorly overall that they would have won the low team in the toilet bowl. That sets up the Penetrators to take on Pimpin Ain't Easy and Bevo's Revenge tangles with Jim Beam Traveler. The Brazos Beatdown dominated the high team competition in the toilet bowl scoring 151 points. The CowHorn LongBoys took the low team honors with a roster total of 105 points. Ditka had 103.

You go out of town and the next thing you know you are on a two game losing streak, in a three way tie for the last playoff spot, and miss out on the tie-breaker. It was a tough way to end the regular season for 308 but we weren't alone. It was undoubtedly the closest, most competitive season ever. As far back as I have records, this is the first year that every team won at least four games. For the most part, there weren't any easy wins. The top team in wins was Jim Beam Traveler who make the playoffs for the first time since 2004 when they were also division champs. They finished the season with nine wins which was one more than South teams Pimpin Ain't Easy and Coast-to-Coast. Pimpin was 4-4 and then rode a four game win streak (and the tie-breaker) to take the South division title. Pimpin makes the playoffs for the second straight year while Coast-to-Coast is back after a one year hiatus. The Penetrators took the last playoff spot in the South and are in the playoffs for the first time since 2005. In the North, Bevo's Revenge took second place two games behind Jim Beam Traveler. They won their last two games to break away from the pack. Bevo's is making their fourth straight playoff appearance. Ditka for President came out of the three way tie for third to take the final playoff spot in the North. Ditka (formally Lawson's Men) makes the playoffs for the first time since 2005. The other season champion crowned was for the NFL Picks contest. After twelve weeks Fi Card Charlee ended with a two game lead over Cleveland Steamers.
Coast-to-Coast dominated the final two weeks of weekly prizes. In week 11, they tied with Pimpin' Ain't Easy for high team with 102 points. In week 12, they swept both weekly prizes taking high team with 175 points and the high position with 88 points (highest point total of the year). The 88 points came from the receiver combination of Lance Moore (31), Braylon Edwards (8), Terrell Owens (36), and TE Tony Gonzalez (13). Week 11 position prize went to Bigdaddyandfilomaforever and their RB tandem of Marion Barber (18) and DeAngelo Williams (35) scoring a total of 53 points.
November 16, 2008
Coast-to-Coast swept the weekly awards for their first weekly prizes of the year. That means that 11 of the 16 teams have now won a weekly prize. Coast-to-Coast scored 142 points and also scored 55 position points with the combination of QB Jay Cutler (46) and K Nate Kaeding (9). Not a lot of movement in the standings. Only one team (CowHorn LongBoys) is eliminated from playoff contention.

You may have noticed that I am always late with an update after a 308 loss. That past weekend was a really tough one with not only 308 going down but also Electra, UT, and the Cowboys. It took a win over Baylor to get me out of my funk (and the Penn St. loss was nice too). Fi Card Charlee wins a weekly prize for the second week in a row. They took high team honors with 112 points in a low scoring week (only two teams over 100 points). They also took high position honors with 39 points using wide receivers Anquan Boldin (10), Calvin Johnson (14), and Donnie Avery (2) as well as tight end Owen Daniels (13). Both divisions are very competitive with only three games left. The best story is the Spice Boys who, after starting 0-4 and being the last team to get a win, have now won five games in a row and are tied for second place in the North. They are only one game behind Jim Beam Traveler. Every team still has playoff potential. The same can be said for the South too. The Penetrators are back in first by themselves but there are four teams only one game back.

Jim Beam Traveler took high team honors in week 8 with 140 points. That was three points better than Fi Card Charlee and four better than Spice Boys. Fi Card Charlee did pick up the high position honors scoring 64 points with the running back tandem of Clinton Portis (12) and Brian Westbrook (52). This was the first weekly prize for both teams and means that ten of the sixteen teams have won a weekly prize so far. With four weeks left in the regular season, the standings continue to be tight. Jim Beam Traveler maintains a one game lead over 308 and Bevo's Revenge in the North. Two teams are two games out and two more three games out. Everyone still has playoff potential. In the South, things are even more competitive. The Penetrators lost their second consecutive game and are now tied for first place with Coast-to-Coast. Four teams are one game out and two teams are two games out. Not only does every team have a shot at the playoffs, every team has a shot at the division crown.

Blitzkrieg made it a clean sweep taking high team (138 points) and high position (40 points) honors. High position was won with the tandem of QB Ben Roethlisberger (25) and K Robbie Gould (15). Just like the Cowboys, the teams with Romo at QB imploded. 308 and the Penetrators could only muster 54 and 67 points, respectively, in losses. Both teams started the week in or tied for first place. At the end of week, the Penetrators were still in first but with only a one game lead over two other teams. Everyone else is one game behind them. Jim Beam Traveler is now alone in first place as the two other teams tied for first lost. There are three teams one game behind Jim Beam Traveler and three teams one game behind them.

We are at the half way point of the regular season and everyone still has a chance at the playoffs. No more than two games separate any one team from a playoff spot. Every team has at least two wins (thanks to Spice Boys second win in a row) and only one team (the Penetrators) has less than two losses. Should make for an exciting second half of the season. For the week, 308 took high team honors with 151 points. This makes the eighth team to win a weekly award in six weeks. Cleveland Steamers took high position for their second weekly award of the season. They totaled 58 points with the wide receiver/tight end combination of Andre Johnson (22), Steve Smith (11), Reggie Wayne (18) and Owen Daniels (7).

Only one team was undefeated and only one team didn't have a win. These two teams played each other and the outcome was never in doubt. It has been a crazy football season and why shouldn't the Tower League be any different. In the mother of all upsets, the Spice Boys defeated Jim Beam Traveler 106 to 72. The loss put Jim Beam Traveler in a tie for first with Bevo's Revenge. In the South, the Penetrators maintain their one game lead. The CowHorn LongBoys took the high team honors with 132 points. The Spice Boys picked up their second consecutive weekly award with the running back tandem of Brandon Jacobs (21) and Brian Westbrook (15) scoring a combined 36 points. The odd game of the week was Ditka for President scoring exactly 0 points from their three starting wide receivers but still defeating the Cleveland Steamers 106 to 102.
October 3, 2008
We're down to one team without a loss and one team without a win. 308 had the misfortune of playing the highest scoring team of the week, Cleveland Steamers (140 points), and even though 308 scored the second highest points of the week, they take the loss. Jim Beam Traveler is the lone undefeated team and owns a one game lead over 308 and Bevo's Revenge in the standings. The lone team without a win is Spice Boys but that didn't stop them from taking the high position honors. They scored 60 points with the combination of QB Brett Favre (52) and K John Kasay (8). As for the standings in the South, the Penetrators sit alone in first place with a one game lead over six other teams (leaving poor Fi Card Charlee alone in last). After four weeks, six of the sixteen teams have won weekly prizes.
September 26, 2008
The Masters made it a clean sweep taking high team honors (157 points) and high position honors (53). High position was comprised of the receiving crew of Lee Evans (6), Larry Fitzgerald (25), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (19) and TE Tony Gonzalez (3). Two of the undefeated teams went down last week. Bevo's Revenge lost to 308 in a battle of undefeated teams and the Penetrators lost to Bigdaddyandfilomaforever. That leaves just two teams undefeated - Jim Beam Traveler and 308. Those two teams also happen to be the top two scorers so far this year. We also had two teams win their first game this year so there are only two teams left without a win - Cleveland Steamers and Spice Boys. The South is very tight as one game separates the entire division.
September 19, 2008
In the North, three of the undefeated teams won (including 308) while there is only one undefeated team left in the South (the Penetrators). We are guaranteed to lose one more team as undefeateds 308 and Bevo's Revenge tangle this week. Hard luck award went to Blitzkrieg who scored the third most points of any team in week two. Unfortunately, they played the highest scoring team of the week, newbie Bigdaddyandfilomaforever. Final score was 148 to 139. Blitzkrieg did get a small consolation prize by winning high position with running backs Adrian Peterson (18) and Marshawn Lynch (15) for a total of 33 points. There are also four teams without a win and two of those play each other this week. I'll wait a week before I start naming names.
September 9, 2008
It was a weird week one and one with a lot of injuries. Pimpin' Ain't Easy swept the weekly prizes with a high team score of 184 and scoring 60 points with the QB/K combo of Drew Brees (50) and Jeff Reed (10). Coast-to-Coast got the poor scheduling award as they scored the third most points of any team in the league but had the misfortune of playing Pimpin'. It was hit or miss with scores ranging from Pimpin's 184 to the low of 59 scored by the CowHorn LongBoys. 308 was welcomed into its new division with a win. Bigdaddyandfilomaforever was welcomed into the league by rival Sparky's Oilers. Of course, neither team could crack 100 points, but Sparky's finished on top.
