December 20, 2005

No changes from the previous update. Bevo’s Revenge cruised through the playoffs. They won every playoff game by at least 30 points. They finished with Lawson’s Men who they beat 119 to 84, defeating them for the third time this year.  They started the year 2 and 3 but then went on to win all but one game. That one game (the last of the year) cost them the division championship but they took care of business in the playoffs. Congratulations on your first Tower League title (and main user of the message board). The two finalists drafted 2nd and 7th this year. The Cleveland Steamers beat Fi Card Charlee 100 to 72 and the Penetrators beat 308 153 to 90. The Masters won high team in the toilet bowl for their first prize of the year scoring 113 points narrowly beating out the Ligers who scored 111. Sparky’s Oilers dominated the losers bracket again scoring a total of 72 points. Only two teams didn’t win a prize all year – Pimpin Ain’t Easy and Mclintock.

Thanks again everyone for participating. Vegas is eight months away (I’m going this time). Happy Holidays to everyone and Hook ‘em.

Update December 18, 2005

Congratulations to Bevo’s Revenge. Behind a solid lineup that had six players in double figure scoring, they scored 119 points to easily defeat Lawson’s Men (84) in the championship game. The other consolation games are also decided though the final scores aren’t yet determined. In the battle of the semi-final winners, the Cleveland Steamers will defeat Fi Card Charlee, meaning that the North division won every head-to-head battle with the South in the playoffs this year. 308 still has players left to score but the Penetrators currently have an 82 point lead behind Tike Barber’s 59 points. In the toilet bowl, it appears that the Masters have the inside track for high team honors. There are a couple of teams with players playing Monday night but they are so far behind it would take some huge games for them to catch up. It also appears that Sparky’s Oilers have clinched the loser’s bracket for the second week in a row. Roeder’s preseason evaluations, mid-season pickups and relentless review of injuries and bye weeks culminated in his toilet bowl success. I’ll have a final wrap up on Tuesday.

Update December 13, 2005

It’s an all North battle in the championship game as the South goes 0-3 in the playoffs. Bevo’s Revenge took out the South champion, Fi Card Charlee, 106 to 74. The other semi-final was a great contest with Lawson’s Men defeating Cleveland Steamers 132 to 129. Bevo’s Revenge and Lawson’s Men have both made the playoffs a number of times over the years but neither has taken the title of champion. In the toilet bowl, Coast-to-Coast made it two weeks in a row. Their 130 points was good enough to take high team honors. Sparky’s Oilers worked hard all season to position themselves for the toilet bowl. All that work finally paid off this week as they easily took low team honors scoring a total of 73 points. Lastly, 308 defeated the Penetrators in the wild card consolation game 123 to 111.

Update December 6, 2005

It was a good weekend for the North playoff teams. Bevo’s Revenge (119-68) and Lawson’s Men (82-59) swept the South wild card teams. This leaves Fi Card Charlee as the lone South representative in the playoffs. Coast-to-Coast took high team honors in the toilet bowl with 115 points. Jim Beam Traveler wracked up an impressive 58 points with its entire roster narrowly beating out Spice Boys (who scored 61) to take the low team honors of the toilet bowl.

Update December 4, 2005

I need to personally thank Steve Keller for calling this to my attention. With 308 and Ligers both losing and Pimpin Ain’t Easy winning their third game in a row and defeating the conference champions the last week of the season, there was a three way tie for the last playoff spot in the South. Reviewing the collective head to head records put 308 in the playoff spot with a combined 3-1 record (Liger 2-1 and Pimpin Ain’t Easy 0-3). Reports and schedules updated accordingly.

Update December 3, 2005

In the final week of the regular season, Coast-to-Coast exploded for 208 points to take high team honors. The Ligers lost to Coast-to-Coast but still managed the high position honors scoring 65 points (Chad Johnson 23, Larry Fitzgerald 6, Kevin Curtis 20, Jeremy Shockey 16). They edged out the Cleveland Steamers whose receivers corps scored 64 points. In the South, three of the top four teams all lost. Two of those still made the playoffs with 308 the odd team out. In the North, there ended up a three way tie for first between Cleveland Steamers, Bevo’s Revenge and Lawson’s Men. First tie-breaker was head-to-head records. The Cleveland Steamers were 1-1, Bevo’s Revenge was 2-2, and Lawson’s Men was 1-2. The placed Lawson’s Men in the three spot and the tie-breaker procedures were started over again for just the Cleveland Steamers and Bevo’s Revenge. The Cleveland Steamers won both matchups against Bevo’s Revenge so the Cleveland Steamers take the division title.

Special congratulations to Fi Card Charlee who finished the season with the best record of any team. They did this even though they had the last pick of the draft. As best I can remember, this is the first time this has happened. On top of that, their first pick was Terrell Owens.

Update November 25, 2005

In a must win game, the Ligers came up big scoring 169 points to easily take high team honors for the week. The win against 308 allowed the Ligers to tie 308 for the final playoff spot in the South. The Penetrators won and clinched second place. Lawson’s Men took high position scoring 58 points with the running back tandem of Larry Johnson (41) and Edgerrin James (17). They also won the game which allowed them to move into a tie for second place. Bevo’s Revenge clinched a playoff spot while four teams battle for the final two spots in the last week.

Update November 16, 2005

Bevo’s Revenge got their third shared weekly award tying for high team honors with Shag-adelic with 140 points. Both Bevo’s Revenge and Shag-adlic won critical games last week. Bevo’s Revenge is now tied for first place with the Cleveland Steamers and Shag-adelic is tied for third with Lawson’s Men one game back of the leaders. Three other teams in the North also still have playoff possibilities but are in must win situations. Bevo’s Revenge also took high position honors with the quarterback/kicker duo of Peyton Manning (33) and Jay Feely (11) scoring 44 points. This was one point better than the Ligers who also had Manning. The playoff possibilities in the South are more limited. Fi Card Charlee has clinched the South division. The Penetrators, 308, and the Ligers are battling for the other two spots. Everyone else is eliminated. The top four teams in the North battle each other this week and 308 plays the Ligers in a big game.

Update November 8, 2005

Shag-adelic, in a must win game, came up big with 143 points. That topped the next best team by 10 points to win high team honors for week nine. It’s Shag-adelic’s third weekly honor and first since sweeping the honors in week five. First place Cleveland Steamers took high position honors with 54 points (Steve Smith 20, Antwaan Randle El 4, Marvin Harrison 24, and Alge Crumpler 6). It’s their second weekly award and the first since week one. As with the NFL, all the teams that were supposed to win did win. The top four teams going into the week based on the web standings all won. With three weeks left, Fi Card Charlee is the first team to clinch a playoff berth and one win away from clinching the division. Only four teams have a shot at the playoffs with Ligers one game behind the Penetrators and 308 for the last playoff spot. In the North only two teams have been eliminated (Spice Boys and the Masters). Big games this week include the Penetrators taking on the Ligers in a critical game for both teams and every game in the North.

Update November 2, 2005

It was quite a competition for high team honors. Four points separated four teams and two even tied for high team. Bevo’s Revenge and Lawson’s Men both scored 139 points for high team. Right behind them and also in the nail-biter of the week was Coast-to-Coast and the Penetrators. Coast-to-Coast won the game 136 to 135. Spice Boys took high position honors as running backs Fred Taylor (35) and Reuben Droughns (9) combined for 44 points. Bevo’s Revenge has two weekly honors which have netted them a total of $20.84 thanks to ties. Of course, that’s still better than the six teams who haven’t won anything yet. Fi Card Charlee has extended their lead to two games in the South while the Ligers are making a playoff push. Nearly every team still has a chance if they make a run. The North is similar. Two teams are tied for second as a result of 3 and 4 game winning streaks. Any team who post a similar streak will have a chance. Special congratulations to Sparky’s Oilers and especially the Masters. Both last place teams won last week. The Masters got their first win of the season at the expense of Shag-adelic who now find themselves tied for fourth.

Update October 25, 2005

Ligers picked up their second weekly honor of the year taking high team with 127 points. They beat out the CowHorn LongBoys who scored 120 points. Ligers also picked up a third of the high position honors as three teams tied with 31 points. Those three teams were Ligers (Peyton Manning 22; Neil Rackers 9), Bevo’s Revenge (Peyton Manning 22; Jay Feely 9), and 308 (Daunte Culpepper 27; Jeff Wilkins 4). The nail biter of the week was Lawson’s Men one point victory over Shag-adelic 108 to 107. That victory helped create a five way tie for second place in the North division. Seven of the eight teams are still in the playoff hunt. The Masters still is winless. In the South, there is a two game spread between the third and fourth place teams. Special congratulations this week goes to Mclintock who got zero points from their quarterback but still won.

Update October 19, 2005

The Penetrators blew everyone away this week to take their third and fourth weekly honors. They scored 146 points which was 17 points better than the next team. Their receiver tandem of Santana Moss (34), Drew Bennett (6), Torry Holt (7) and Jason Witten (7) totaled 54 points which was enough for high position honors. Shag-adelic was the only top team to lose last week which moved them from a tie for first to a tie for second in the North. They lost in the closest game of the week losing by one point to first place Cleveland Steamers 117 to 116. The Masters lost for the sixth straight week. It was a heart breaker as they lost by only two points to Jim Beam Traveler (74 to 72).

We are at the halfway point of the season with six games left. Over the last three years four teams have made the playoffs with five losses. As such, those teams with four and five losses need to go on a good run to have a chance. Big games this week include the top two teams in the South (Fi Card Charlee and the Penetrators) going head to head as well as the 3rd and 4th place teams (308 and Pimpin Ain’t Easy). In the North everyone is alive except the Masters who will try to play a spoiler role.

Update October 11, 2005

It was a week of blowouts. Just like UT over OU. Only one game was within 20 points. In that game, the Masters lost their fifth straight to start the season with an 8 point defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Steamers. Two teams won by over 60 points. Congratulations to Sparky’s Oilers and Spice Boys who scored 39 and 40 points respectively. High team honors went to Shag-adelic who scored 131 points narrowly beating out the Penetrators who scored 127 points. Shag swept the weekly awards also taking high position honors scoring 36 points (Shaun Alexander 29 and Julius Jones 7).

Update October 9, 2005

I was so depressed after 308’s first loss of the season that I couldn’t get myself to send out an update. After UT’s win over OU, my spirits were lifted and I was able to face the disappointment of last week.

Coast-to-Coast’s consistent play finally paid off as they took high team honors with 138 points narrowly beating out Ligers (130 points). All wasn’t bad for the Ligers as they took high position with the combination of Peyton Manning (31) and Sebastian Janikowski (17) scoring 48 points. There was only one close game last week as Mclintock defeated the Spice Boys by one point 107 to 106. After four weeks, the standings are tight. There are no more undefeated teams as Jim Beam Traveler was also beat last week. The Masters remain the lone team without a win.

Update September 29, 2005

After taking high position last week, the Penetrators took high team honors this week with 168 points just a head of 308 who scored 163 points. 308 did take high team honors scoring 65 points with wide receivers Steve Smith (36), Eddie Kennison (11), Darrell Jackson (12) and tight end Jermaine Wiggins (6). Mclintock came in a close second scoring 61 points. Only two games were decided by less than ten points. Pimpin Ain’t Easy beat previously undefeated Fi Card Charlee by 8 points and Mclintock beat the always defeated Masters team by 5 points. After three weeks there are only two undefeated teams and two teams without a win. Not surprisingly the two teams without a win have had the most points scored on them as well. Coast-to-Coast has had 441 points scored against them while the Masters is next with 377 points scored against them. Coast-to-Coast has scored 332 points and hasn’t won a game while Fi Card Charlee has scored only 301 and is 2 and 1. The Masters lost on the Vick kneel down earlier this year and lost this week due to the reversal of a Kennison touchdown with two minutes in the game and Denver winning by 27. That reversal cost 308 high team honors too. That’s justice for you. (Thanks May for the week three highlights.)

Update September 20, 2005

308 went from good to lucky. In the second tie game in as many weeks, 308 and Pimpin Ain’t Easy tied 69 to 69 with 308 taking the tie breaker. The CowHorn LongBoys took high team honors with 150 points just nosing out Spice Boys who scored 149 points. Special congratulations to Coast-to-Coast who has now played the high team in both weeks. Looks like 308 should be back in the money this week. The Masters provided the low point of the week scoring only 44 points. Spice Boys only won by 105 points. I bet they were sweating that one. The Penetrators took high position honors with the running back duo of Shaun Alexander (25 points) and Tiki Barber (20 points). After two weeks there are only four undefeated teams and four winless teams. Will the Masters win a game this year?

Update September 13, 2005

What a week. I don’t think you could ask for a better, more exciting week of football (at least from my perspective). It was a great football weekend for me. Friday was a little disappointing as the Electra Tigers were up early on state ranked (all be it class A) Windthorst but ultimately were defeated. Saturday was awesome as VY makes another incredible comeback (I’m drafting him next year) for the Horns. Sunday the Cowboys do the same. Then there is fantasy football. The stars finally got back to their normal position as evidenced by 308 taking high team honors with 128 points. 308 hadn’t won a high team honor since week six of 2003 so we were definitely due. Four of the eight games were decided by five points or less and one of those was a tie. Bevo’s Revenge wins a heart breaker over The Masters with a tiebreaker score of 47 to 44. You can’t get much closer than that. The Cleveland Steamers, despite a tough two point loss, took high position honors with 37 points (Delhomme 19 and Wilkins 18). The last bit of evidence that things are back the way they should be? Sparky’s Oilers starts off the season with the lowest score of the week – 57 points (Pimpin Ain’t Easy was nearby with 60 points which is about right as well). Finally, things are back to normal.

Update August 21, 2005

Everything is finally updated and ready to go.

Update July 31, 2005

We start the 2005 season.
